Timer unlikely to be responsible for leak

It shouldn't. It isn't the timer that controls water fill amount it is the washer's water level pressure switch (see the following links).

Even if the timer stuck on fill for days, the water level control shouldn't allow any more water to enter the machine that it was calibrated to.
