I couldn't have said any of this better myself. Being a refinisher myself I can understand why someone would want to refinish a tub themselves with a kit.
If you wish to try it on your own it's worth a shot. This solution may be good as a temporary fix, like when you're selling your home. The worst that can happen more often that not is that it fails and needs to be redone professionally.
