roof repair versus new roof

I have a relatively new architectural shingle that was improperly installed right over an old wood shake roof. without felt etc. Now it is leaking and I know we need a new roof. If we rip down to the frame , add the plywood, etc. and re roof. can we assume the frame is structurally sufficient for the new roof. Considering the original roof weighed less than an asphalt shingle roof. I dont want to re frame house.
