1st used putty knife followed w/0000 steel wool then toothpaste,,, our marble was white & the difference in polish reflectivity is not easily noticed partially due to its location (floor sill) - color & location may change your results,,, did mask the surrounding area w/what's commonly called duct tape.
for a diy-er, you can buy dri/wet diamond polishing pads but, for all the effort & learning curve involved coupled w/the distinct possibility of creating more damage, look in the yellow pages.
