new light fixture

I bought a new vanity light fixture. My house is about 40 years old. The old one had 4 lights and a outlet. My new one had 3 lights and no outlet. When I took it apart ther were 2 white and 2 black wires, but the fixture has 2 black and 2 white wires going to one side and 1 black and 1 white going to the other side. I taped off the outlet wires with electrical tape and taped them together. My question is do I put all of the white and all of the black together? I am a mom who is doing this for the first time so no laughing at me thanks
