Tar paper on hardwood floor

We've got the same problem in our 1930's Cape Cod. We haven't found an easy fix yet, but so far we've tried goo gone and goof off, both of which you can get at most hardware stores. Both help, but they're not quick and easy answers. Goof off seems to work better, but the fumes are quite strong. We're going to also try mineral spirits and denatured alcohol. Another idea is Citr-Strip - I haven't seen any sort of adhesive that citr-strip won't remove. Be careful trying different chemicals...don't mix!
