That should have been plumbing chase.

That is the space between the walls where the water supply lines and the drain and vent lines are.

Now in very old house where there was no indoor plumbing when it was built sometimes the drain and vent or on the outside of the house.

Plumbing supply lines won't be on the outside except in the tropics or sub-tropics.
