Sealing Porch with Roofing Tar

Posted by Kevin on December 1st, 2008 10:23 AM

I have a framed-in porch that was built over an existing concrete slab patio. Whoever built it simply put what looks like a metal u-shaped frame on the concrete, and used P/T wood to build the frame. The porch has since been resheathed and sided with vinyl siding. The problem is that whenever it rains, water pools up a bit on the few inches of slab that stcik out on all three sides of the porch. It then slowly seeps under the walls and comes into the porch itself. The slab is graded away from the house, but a small amount of water consistently comes in.

My question is... Would pulling the lowest piece of siding off, as well as the J-channel and other pieces, and using roofing tar to seal up the small gap between the metal and concrete work? Would the tar be enough to seal it and prevent the water from getting in? Perhaps there is another kind of sealant that could be used? ANy help is greatly appreciate!
