Here are a few tips for putting drywall over plaster...
1) 1/4 inch drywall is a very popular choice, but not as sturdy as 3/8.
2) If your not taking out the plaster cieling the electrician will have to use a remodling can instead of a new constuction. So make sure that whatever the thickness of the drywall is does not exceed what the remodel cans can clip onto. I have ran into this problem before and it can be very frustrating.
3) Be sure to use screws to suck up any sagging areas of plaster before putting up drywall or the new cieling could show that sagging point if using a thin drywall.
4) I always glue every sheet of dywall on a cieling in addition to screwing it up. The glue will help prevent the screws from moving and popping the drywall mud out of the hole.
5) Make sure that you screw the new drywall throught the existing plaster cieling and into the rafters. You will need to use a long enough screw to penetrate the rafter by at least a 1/2 inch. You can use a chalk box to mark each the run of each rafter from end to end. Simply screwing the drywall to the lathe beneath will show wear quickly.
