because of a poorly set air control, not a fault with the furnace! And the soot is from the same cause. It's like saying you need a new engine because the car is running too rich! It just needs to be adjusted but apparently this guy would rather sell you a new furnace?
Find a new furnace guy. Properly adjusted your furnace will run better, last longer, be far more efficent and cost you less to run. It's nothing more than something a quick tune-up can't fix.
