Whenever you have a gas appliance and especially when you have one that may be malfunctioning you must install a CO monitor. Don't listen to anyone until you get one installed. Home stores have plug in models. They are even combined with smoke detectors now.
After that a rule of thumb is a fully blue flame is burning the gas well, yellow is bad.
