From what have the exterior walls of your home been constructed?
Insulated concrete wall construction can account for what you are finding.
So, too, can steel framed construction.
But if your home has been constructed in a conventional stick-framed style, you may simply be hitting metal protection plates which are installed over wood studs and under the drywall to protect pipes, gas lines, and electric cables which may be run just under the drywall.
