Kenmore Range/oven model 790xxx with fault code 31

My Kenmore smooth-top Range/Oven model 790xxx has developed a nasty habit of throwing a fault code #31 which, according to another forum, indicates this is a "Shorted Probe Connection"....whatever that means. I can easily clear it, but it faults (with a beeping alarm) at all times of the day (and night). It has also thrown the code while cooking, and shuts the unit off until we can reset it and program the function, temp, etc. all over again. Is this a relatively easy fix or will I need to call a repair tech to address it?
I'm reasonably good at following directions, but really didn't feel confident just wading into this job.
