Double hung window sash balance replacement

Just wanted to add a final step, and that is that you will need to use a tensioning tool, or somehow wind up the spiral, to make the window stay up.
I do not recommend this but the way I did it was by first installing the sash, then before hooking the pin into the window pivot I made it recoil all the way up to the base of the aluminum tube, and then pulled it straight down - without letting it unwind - with a pair of needle-nose pliers. This provided a fair amount of tension, but to get more I kept coiling it 8-10 more turns by using two sets of pliers. Not the smartest thing I've ever done but it worked.
