Our "ancestral" home is about 120 years old. Until 5 years ago, there was virtually no attic ventilation. When the house was re-roofed in 2001, ridge vents were added, but they didn't seem to do much good.

So, 5 years ago I had soffit vents installed. Prior to that, whenever I did my weekly dusting, there was just a normal amount of "regular" dust on furniture. Ever since the installation of the soffit vents, there is a lot more dust, and it is BLACK! When I wash the windows the paper towels I use turn black.

I have to believe that it cannot a good thing to be breathing this stuff.

I thought I was doing the right thing by ventilating the attic, but I wish I had let sleeping dogs lie! Why is this happening, and what can I do to stop it?
