Attic Ventilation Posted by CalicoJane on June 29th, 2009 07:21 PM In reply to house by Unregistered-t.b. on June 29th, 2009 06:46 PM [Go to top of thread]
And coal soot wasn't just dusty, it was greasy, too. Yuck!
When we moved in 21 years ago, I had electricity and plumbing run to the 2nd floor and we boxed in the pipes and wires. But since it was on an outside wall, we insulated to keep the pipes from freezing, so I don't think anything's getting through there.
You know, I'm pretty sure the cold air returns for the 2nd floor just run between the studs of the house. The 2nd floor heat runs and cold air returns were added in the 40's, so they were put wherever they could be fitted in. Before that, the upstairs was "heated" by means of 2 holes in the floor. We still have the fancy grille from one of them.
So would the coal dust be coming from inside the walls? How would the increased attic ventilation cause the air to flow through the spaces between the walls and into the rooms? Was this post helpful? Yes: or No:
