Smoke detector mystery

Posted by szarbar on July 1st, 2009 04:53 PM

We have BRK 4919 hard wired and connected smoke detectors in our home. A few months back they went off in the middle of the night with no reason. We contacted the company and were told they had a 5 yr. life and needed to be replaced. We replaced the one unit that went off and thought we'd solved the problem. About a week ago the new unit went off. We pulled it off and had the actual smoke detector unit sitting on our dresser. We have a system linked to our home alarm so we're not that worried about missing a fire.

Fast forward to this AM when the alarm went off without anything being attached. The siren was wailing in our room even though the actual unit was sitting on the dresser. The sound was coming from the ceiling and nothing we did would stop it. It finally just stopped on its own.

I know nothing about wiring but it seems weird to me that a siren is going off even without a smoke detector unit attached. Any ideas of what I should be looking for? What might solve this mystery?
