You can do it by removing the tail light lens, use 1000 grit abrasive paper then go over with 1200 grit.
After that, wash in warm water with a mild detergent. polish with toothpaste & you are done. It doesn't look too bad, has a nice shine etc. The more time & care you put into it, the better it will look in the end.
