Fake Brick or Stone on Wallpapered Wall around Fireplace

I have a fireplace that has drywall which is Wallpapered around the fireplace. It looks horrible. I want to get that fake Brick or Stone and just do the whole thing from floor to ceiling. The Wallpaper is vinyl and won't come off without destroying the drywall. Can I put the Brick or Stone over this. If I can do you have any suggestions what is the best brick or stone I could use? Please help me
