Water from gas furnace

Posted by Nanoman on November 1st, 2009 01:06 PM

Hi,

I have noticed a small amount of water next to the bottom of my gas fired furnace periodically. The furnace is an AirQuest model N9MP1 installed by the previous homeowner in 2000. I had a HVAC service tech look at it and he said it was a cracked heat exchanger, turned off the gas and said I should consider a new furnace. In fact, he stated that my current 100K BTU furnace is oversized for my older 1,300 sq. ft. house (in upstate New York with recently installed replacement double pane windows) and that the furnace installation was a subpar job.

My CO monitor (in basement) does not indicates any significant amount of CO (0 ppm).

Questions:

1. Is it reasonable that the small amount of water would be from a cracked heat exchanger?

2. Is it worthwhile to replace the heat exchanger (parts should be under warranty)vs buying a new furnace?
Current furnace is 10 year old and has 90% energy rating.

3. What would be a reasonable time estimate (number of hours) for the HVAC tech. to replace the heat exchanger?

4. The HVAC Service tech recommended a 60K BTU furnace versus my 100K BTU unit. Is there any issues with having the high capacity furnace?

Thank you
