but your method's an accepted 1,,, i'd use a 4" grinder & diamond blade to outline the work areas & crosshatch 'em w/sawcuts to lessen the nec vibration time,,, if your pipe were plastic, i wouldn't bother,,, old blk pipe's another story, tho.
pneumatic guns of the 15# class would be acceptable to me using a carbide-tipp'd chisel,,, you may only have a point avail - its your call, neverless.
just for ***** & goggles, locate the main gas svce shutoff in advance ;-) 'nuff said ? ? ?
