Need help with a garage door opener

Hello. I am having trouble with my garage door opener. It is a Craftsman 1/2 h.p., with a p/n of 41A5021-3E. When you push the button on the opener for it it tries to close the door too far...and when the door opens it only opens part of the way. We took the chain off and put it in the open position, attached the garage door, tried to close and open it again and it still tried to close the door too much. Once it tried to close it too much, when we got it to open again, it only opens part of the way again even though we reset the chain. Anyone know why its doing this and how to fix it?
