Hi Mark
I had a similar problem with our current house, and I tried several fixes. The one that worked best while having the least damaging effect to the hardwood finish was paint thinner. I soaked it on with a brush, let it set a few minutes, then scraped off with a stiff blade 4" putty knife. It was a bit of labor, but worked well in the end.
