remove doorknobs,soak in white vinegar overnight,dip in a solution of strong sodiumbicarbonate and rinse with water.Polish with a proprietory brand of polish but avoid anything that contains ammonia or anhydrous chemicals.Many established brands use these products as antioxidants,however it has been proven that they prematurely age alloys especially brass,causing brittleness,cracks and figures.see www.englishcustompolishing.com/restorat.htm
