My grandmother's fireplace is painted and she hates it. It has about ten layers of paint on it now- it almost looks plastic! I told her NO WAY! when she asked me if I would remove it. (Hey, I love my grandma but...) If you really must make a permanent decision like this consider staining the brick instead of painting it. You can purchase a good brick stain at your local homeimprovement store.
