rehabilitating fireboxes by covering the old brick with fire clay cement

We have a 150 year old home that has eight fireplaces, and we are interested in rehabilitating some of the fireboxes by covering the old brick with fire clay cement. I purchased two 50 lb bags of fire clay, but I dont't know if it requires mixing with sand, and what ratio. Can you give some instruction on what fire clay is made up from, and do I need to mix it with anything...
