There are 3 type of gas log sets: vented, direct-vent, and vent free. Don't assume yours is vent-free, especially if its been "many years since its been used".
if you're not 100% sure, treat it like a vented set of gas logs.
Even if its vent-free, you may want to leave the flue open a crack to vent the slght odor that some vent-free models have.
