Don't do it! This would be a bad mistake. I install ceramic tile, and their are many possible problems that could arise. 1) Is the vinyl a perimiter glued floor (glued just around the edges. 2) Is the vinyl free of residues (grease,soaps,detergents). 3) Is the contractor willing to eat the job if it doesn't stick or breaks up. The answer to most of these questions is I DON'T KNOW or NO. The ceramic tile industry require 1 1/2 inches of wood flooring and you don't have that. You need 1/4 inch ceramic tile backer board (wonderboard)mortared and nailed down over the existing vinyl floor,(if it is a fully glued floor) first wash the vinyl floor with amonia and water to be sure their is no grease. Also you need no barrier, so question the contractors ability.
