Oops, I Should Have Elaborated, it's already painted...

Very sorry, I failed to mention an important point (after reading all your posts). The paneling already has paint on it, paint has been there for the 5 years we've lived here (and is holding up well) Don't know how long the prior owners had it painted. I agree with you, Joe, that ripping it off and starting fresh is the 'proper' way to go. Unfortunately dear hubby does not want to bother with it, and I know diddly about hanging/taping drywall, otherwise I'd be willing to tackle it! :-). Thank you all so much for your input, apologies again for not stating it was already painted. -Kathy
