Gas Furnace Problem

We have a Carrier gas furnace (9 yrs old). The pilot light will not stay on when the pilot button is released. I have replaced the thermocoupler twice with no results. Getting a repairman here now is impossible, so I'd like to take a stab at fixing it myself. Any advice on if I should continue and what the problem could be? I am your basic homeowner with slightly above average DIY skills.
