It would be hard for the plunger to go any further than the trap. I'd start with pulling the trap or trying to fish the chain with a fishhook on a wire. If you can't get at the trap and remove it, then you will need a plumber to do it. Some are hard to get at and may require tub removal or cutting into a wall.
