most of the digital thermastats found at home depot etc. are battery operated. not battery backup. so battery life is very limited. they will reset to default settings when batteries die. It is possible for weak batteries to seem ok but then die when it tries to operate the furnace relay. after it resets to default, the current drain is removed and batteries seem ok again.
