Paint gun problems

Anyone have experience with paint spray guns?

I just bought one - it sprays paint and the spray pattern seems to be OK - but the spray is not consistent. After about 1 second of spraying, the paint stops coming out for a 1/2 second - then starts again. Lots of air is still coming out, but the paint does not.

I tried thinning the paint - I also tried spraying plain water.

I have a filter on my air compressor and the paint gun does not appear to be clogged in any way.

Also, the compressor turns on after 5 seconds of spraying - it seems like it's being overworked. (Pancake tank.) Perhaps the spray gun is using too much air? Is this normal?

I have tried various amounts of air pressure - from 30 lbs to 90 lbs. - no difference.

Any thoughts?
