I forgot my safety speech. Make sure all breakers are thrown. Also have a voltmeter or circuit tester to check for voltage before touching any wires since a shock can kill. Sometimes a circuit can have a shared neutral or be wired into a circuit for another room or floor and you don't realize that it can still be hot. And if all else fails, hire an electrician.
