I have just bought an old house which has crumbling asbestos from a heat pipe. I know I' m going to be told to hire an abatement company to get rid of this, but I would like to know if anyone out there can offer me some advise on removing the rest of it without going this route. I'm very limited on funds, and I am afraid that if I call a company to come in to give me an estimate which I can't afford, they'll report me to the EPA and have the house condemned, or some such nonsense. I'd really like to have the house tested, however, as I feel that the crubling material might have travelled throughout the house via tracking it upstairs. I know Asbestos is dangerous, but I feel it has been made into a "black plague" whereby anyone who comes in contact with it will surely die a slow and painful death.
