We have decided to put hardwood flooring down in the kitehen, dining room and foyer. It will be going over 20 year old vinyl (asbestos backing)in the kitchen. We have weighed the pros and cons of vinyl, tile and hardwood and like the look and feel of hardwood. We are a typical family with a large dog and a couple of kids so it will definitely get alot of use and probably some abuse. I have several questions about hardwood.
1. What type of wood is most durable? 2. How thick should the plank be? 3. Beveled edge or not? 4. Knowing it will be scratched from the dog what do I look for to minimize? How many layers of poly? 5. In general how do I educate myself on this product and what type of things should I be aware of and look out for. 6. Is there any particular brand that is better than another?
