On the other hand, if you don't like the looks and aren't worried about the cabinets, then go for it since it your cabinets and your nickle. Sand them to rough up the surface and use a primer like kilz and then paint away and good luck. Paint everything that is nailed down but like anything else who knows how long it will last before you need to repaint just like the rest of the house. You are basically going from a maintenance free surface to one that will require future maintenance.
