consider just rocking over this stuff and be done with it. You have a nice new clean surface from which to work and you can paint it, paper it, texture it, just whatever. You are doing a very hard job, but if your dead set, consider using a very stiff putty scraper that you are continuously sharpening and then dipping it into boiling hot water to help melt, and pry the junk off.
