I am uncertain what you are cleaning off of the bricks, if it is soot or dried cement then you can use a chemical called Disclean (in the uk). It's an acid that, used with a wire brush will bring the bricks up real nice. Of course the wire brush it's self is fairly good. If the bricks are covered in Sand/Lime Mortar and possibly they are given that they are 100 years + then a brick trowel and some careful aiming is the fastest way to clean them. If the bricks are fire damaged and you are going to build a wall which is to be plastered you will need to paint them with something like PVA to prevent 'cold tar' coming through to the surface of the plaster
