Dugan, I painted mine with an interior oil base semi-gloss trim paint about twenty years ago and the only problem I've had is the spot where the pan for the shower above that ceiling leaked. The rest of it still looks new. If you are going to have a moisture/rust problem it's likely to be the side facing the ceiling.....where you have already not painted. But, if Henry in MI disagrees with me.....Henry is right.
