This watersoftener uses a twin tank design. So you are really paying for two softeners. One tank (#1)is softening the water while the other is being tank#2 is regenerating and then resting. When tank #1 needs to regenerated tank #2 will then soften the water. Thus you always have soft water 100% of the time. The other softeners will regenerate at 2:00AM in the morning (or a user selected time) Do you really need any softwater at that time? I would say 80% of the softeners in homes today are this type.
For a single tank design go with one that will measure the water consumed "demand type" Look for the valve to be a FLECK of AUTOTROL design they are #1 and #2 Be sure to have your water tested and get the unit sixes correctely. 24K,32K and 48K are the most commonly used ones. References:As an engineer I have just done some research to up grade my 24K unit to a 48K unit in our home. My local water treatment store has a 48K unit "demand type meter" for $750 installed. Or $650 it you know how to install. (A piece of cake . Three pipe conections an plug it in.) Good luck and shop around Get many quotes and watch for the sizing and number of features.
