Dan, I would tend to suspect forced air heat ducts. They expand and contract with changes in temperature. The hot air side sees the most change. Perhaps there is a section that was moving before and now gets hung up. Eventually the stress from it wanting to move will overcome the friction and the movement creates the bang.
