...I'm a roofer in NYC... which has a much different climate than your area, so my views are based on severe weather climates. I would stay away from shake shingles. Shake doesn't last a second longer than organic asphalt...and it costs more to purchase, install, and maintain. If you just want a fancy look, and don't mind the additional $$ check out Terra Cotta.
