The worst thing you can do is deep water a foundation. The more water, the more settling occurs. When you have a high water table or artificially introduce water, the ground tends to put stress on the foundation from the weight of the saturated ground. It could take years but the foundation will eventually begin showing signs of horizontal cracking. Now you have to reinforce the foundation from the inside. Ironically this was told to me by an engineer/home inspector yesterday.
