Bob, butt joints are always hard to blend. You need to have a broad transition area around the joints. We always used a 12 inch broadknife on the final coat of "mud". Seems like a lot for a small repair but is necessary. Also do a good sanding job but don't sand through the tape on the joint. If you have painted with a gloss or semi-gloss it will show the repair more than a flat paint.
