Heat Gun as opposed to chemical strippers

We have a 1913 Arts & Crafts bungalow. The inside of the house is
old growth straight grain fur and every bit of it has been painted with
brown high gloss paint, at least 4 layers. We are currently using chemical strippers but I
was told that a heat gun would do a better cleaner job. This is a massive
undertaking and if there is a better way please help! We have a heat gun on hand but
my husband feels that it will burn the wood.
