R-30 is a very respectable level of insulation. (It's twice as good as R-15, as you might have guessed.)
R-30 is about as high as you could get - you could add rigid foam insulation which might get you up to R-45 - I would guess (without doing any scientific polling) that most homes have R-15 to R-20 insulation values.
