I am looking for tips on sanding a 35 year old cedar floor. I have already used an orbital sander, but 60 grit paper only took about 1/3 of the old finish off. I am skeptical about using a regular drum sander, which I have used successfully on hardwood floors, knowing that cedar is softer and can be easily damaged. My fear is that using 40 grit paper on a drum sander would take too much off. Mostly what has to come off is a darkened topcoat. There is one small area of the floor that looks like someone experimented in staining it then gave up.
