Another solution ?

If cleaning doesn't work, and the burn is on either side of the sink or range, try buying a nice Ciba-Corning glass cutting board. They're quite decorative, and come in different colors and styles. At $30, might be a good solution. Of course, the optimal solution of jumping back in time and telling your MIL to get of the kitchen just isn't available :-)
