Take it from someone who has just installed two ceiling fans w/light kits (all by my little self, mind you). Connect the black AND blue wire to the hot wire in your ceiling (mine was black) and the white (neutral) to the neutral wire. If you think about it, this configuration makes perfect sense, since the two wires coming from the light kit are blue and white (generally speaking). It confused me initially because there was no black, but after wiring the black and blue BOTH to the black wire at the ceiling connection gave the proper results.
